How to Make Kolukattai in 15 Minutes – Quick & Easy Recipe

Kolukattai (also called Kozhukattai) is a traditional South Indian sweet dumpling, usually made during Ganesh Chaturthi as an offering to Lord Ganesha. While the classic version can take time, here’s a 15-minute quick recipe that gives you soft, tasty kolukattais without the long prep.

Ingredients

 (Makes ~10 Kolukattais)

For Dough:

  • Rice Flour – 1 cup
  • Water – 1 cup
  • Salt – ¼ tsp
  • Gingelly Oil – 1 tsp

For Sweet Filling:

  • Grated Coconut – ½ cup
  • Grated Jaggery – ½ cup
  • Cardamom Powder – ¼ tsp

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Prepare the Sweet Filling (5 mins)

  • In a small pan, melt jaggery with 2 tbsp water.
  • Strain to remove impurities.
  • Return to the pan, add grated coconut and cardamom powder.
  • Cook for 2–3 minutes until it thickens slightly. Set aside.

2. Make the Dough (5 mins)

  • Boil 1 cup water with salt and gingelly oil in a pan.
  • Lower the heat and add rice flour little by little, stirring continuously.
  • Switch off the flame, cover, and rest for 2 minutes.
  • While still warm, knead into a smooth, soft dough.

3. Shape the Kolukattais (5 mins)

  • Grease your hands with oil. Take a small portion of dough, flatten it into a cup shape.
  • Place 1 tsp of the filling in the center and seal it into a dumpling shape (or modak shape).

4. Steam (Optional but Quick)

  • Place in an idli steamer or plate and steam for 3–4 minutes until shiny.

Tips for Speed

  • Use store-bought idiyappam flour for faster dough preparation.
  • Make filling a day ahead and refrigerate — just warm before use.
  • Keep a bowl of water nearby to keep dough moist while shaping.
